A memorable SUP Safari on St Patrick’s Stream.

Paddle Sport Leaders from DPBClub and DavePaddles teamed up; allowing us to take a larger group for a collaborative multi-craft trip that turned out to be a delightful experience.

THE LAUNCH:

After a thorough safety briefing, 15 launched from The George & Dragon and set off upstream. The excitement was palpable as we navigated the first challenge: portaging Shiplake Lock. With the sun shining and spirits high, we opted for the longer but more sheltered route behind the aits, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the surroundings whilst escaping the worst of the wind.

Dave led the safety brief.

A QUICK BREAK:

Once we reached St Patrick’s Stream, we rafted up for a quick drink and a chat. It was the perfect moment to relax, watch paddlers in the iconic Devizes to Westminster event glide by, and take in the vibrant atmosphere.

As we entered the stream, the landscape transformed into a picturesque scene with willow trees lining the banks and crystal-clear, shallow waters flowing gently beneath us. The thrill of the adventure was just beginning!

NAVIGATING THE WEIR:

Following Dave’s expert guidance, we carefully spaced ourselves and approached the “weir” – a sneaky metal obstruction lurking just beneath the surface. With our SUPpers staying low and moving forward, we lifted our fins clear, gliding through the deepest gap. Dave was positioned in his kayak, ready to assist anyone who might take an unexpected plunge, adding an element of safety and camaraderie to our journey.

THE FLOW OF THE STREAM:

The current was swift, making paddling almost effortless. Instead, we focused on skillful steering to navigate around low-hanging branches that occasionally threatened our path. Midway through, we took a break to either raft up at a pontoon for a snack or disembark to stretch our legs and rehydrate. It was a welcome pause filled with laughter and shared stories.

Taking a break.

EXPLORING THE RIVER LODDON:

Continuing our adventure, we joined the River Loddon, where we marveled at the stunning stilted houses perched along the banks.

Attempting to raft up for a classic group photo beneath the iconic bridge proved to be a hilarious challenge, with some paddlers skillfully maneuvering while others found themselves in a bit of a tangle!

THE RETURN JOURNEY:

Heading back, we rejoined the Thames and headed toward the pub. Although our start was later than planned, we had taken a relaxed pace, allowing us to savor every moment. Dave took his group off to continue paddling while the rest of us settled in for a delicious meal at the pub.

Some headed home after the meal, but a few of us were eager to extend the adventure by completing the planned journey down the Hennerton Backwater. We even crossed paths with Dave’s group on their way back upstream, adding another layer of fun to an already fantastic day.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Dave, Liz, and Clare for planning and leading another successful safari. Until next time, may your paddles be steady and your adventures plenty!
